VC in 2026: AI Bets, Broken Exits, New Rules

Six of the ten largest startup exits from late 2025 through Q1 2026 came from AI-related companies or fintech platforms. That single data point tells you almost everything about where venture capital stands today. The asset class is not recovering broadly. It is recovering narrowly, selectively, and almost entirely around artificial intelligence. For founders building outside that lane, the math has quietly gotten much harder.

The structural backdrop matters here. Since 2022, net cash flows to LPs have been negative by $169 billion. Fund managers have taken longer to close new vehicles as limited partners, starved of distributions, refuse to recommit capital without proof of returns. The result is a concentration effect: established firms with strong track records are pulling in a disproportionate share of available capital, while emerging managers and generalist funds are being squeezed out. The market did not reset evenly. It reset in favor of those who already had the network and the brand.

On the exit side, the IPO window has cracked open rather than swung wide. Strategic acquirers like Google, OpenAI, and ServiceNow are paying premium valuations for AI startups with proprietary technology and defensible datasets, which is driving the headline numbers. But that activity masks a deeper freeze in the broader M&A market. For the majority of venture-backed companies sitting in aging portfolios, liquidity remains elusive. Capital that entered in 2020 and 2021 at peak valuations is still trapped, and that pressure is quietly reshaping what investors ask of founders at every stage.

The downstream effect on early-stage funding is real and underappreciated. Investors are demanding profitability milestones at Series A that would have been considered Series B or C benchmarks two cycles ago. The logic is simple: with distributions constrained and fund economics under pressure, GPs cannot afford to carry companies through long, capital-intensive growth phases. Founders who walk into a fundraise with a story about future scale and a burning cash position are finding doors closed that would have opened in 2021. The bar has shifted, and it has shifted fast.

The next twelve months will sharpen these dynamics further before they soften. If the IPO window widens meaningfully in late 2026, some of the LP pressure will ease and fund formation may recover modestly. But AI deal concentration is structural, not cyclical. Strategic acquirers will keep pulling the best AI talent and technology at premium prices, setting valuation anchors that the rest of the market cannot match. Founders in non-AI categories need to operate as if outside capital is scarce, because for most of them, it is. The venture capital era of broad optimism is over. The value creation era, as some are already calling it, rewards precision, not potential.
