$297B in One Quarter: VC's AI Supercycle Is Real

Venture capital just had its most consequential quarter on record, and the numbers are not a rounding error. Global startup funding hit $297 billion in Q1 2026, a 2.5x increase year-over-year and roughly 70% of all VC deployed across the entirety of 2025. According to Crunchbase data published April 1, approximately 6,000 startups received funding in a single 90-day window. This is not a spike. It is a structural reset.

AI is the engine, not the excuse. Of that $297 billion, $239 billion, or 81%, flowed directly into AI companies spanning infrastructure, tooling, and application layers. Four mega-rounds alone, OpenAI at $120B, Anthropic at $30B, xAI at $20B, and Waymo at $16B, accounted for $186 billion, or 64% of the entire quarter. When two-thirds of a record-breaking quarter is explained by four checks, the market is not diversifying. It is concentrating with conviction.

The geographic picture is equally stark. U.S. companies captured $247 billion, or 83% of global venture funding, reinforcing America's grip on the frontier AI layer at a moment when that layer is arguably the most valuable real estate in technology. Late-stage deals dominated the mechanics, with $244 billion deployed across just 582 transactions. That math, over $400 million per deal on average at the late stage, tells you exactly where institutional conviction is sitting: on proven, capital-hungry AI bets, not early exploration.

For founders outside the AI superstars, this creates a paradox. Capital has never been more abundant in aggregate, yet its distribution has never been more narrow. Seed and early-stage rounds risk being crowded out by the gravitational pull of mega-rounds that dominate LP attention and fund deployment timelines. Investors are not retreating from risk. They are repricing it, deciding that the risk of missing the AI infrastructure buildout outweighs the risk of over-concentrating. That is a rational bet, but it is one that shapes who gets funded and who does not.

The next 12 months will stress-test whether this concentration is genius or groupthink. If frontier AI labs begin generating revenue at a scale that justifies these valuations, the supercycle narrative becomes self-reinforcing and late-stage multiples will hold. If monetisation timelines slip, or if compute costs fail to compress on schedule, the correction will be fast and it will be loud. Either way, the Q1 2026 data has drawn a line. Founders and investors who understand what side of that line they are on will make better decisions than those still waiting for the cycle to clarify itself.
