The AI Mega Round Is Starving the Rest of Tech

US venture capital funding reached a massive $19.44 billion across 492 completed deals in July 2026. However, this headline growth masks a starkly bifurcated reality for founders outside the artificial intelligence bubble. A staggering 67 percent of that capital, totaling $13.08 billion, was swallowed by just 196 AI companies. This leaves the vast majority of the startup ecosystem fighting over the remaining crumbs.
The concentration of capital highlights a structural shift where venture firms are placing massive, concentrated bets on infrastructure rather than broad software plays. It is no longer enough to build an innovative product, as investors are heavily prioritizing capital-intensive compute and energy hardware. This trend is centralizing wealth in specific geographies, with California pulling in $10.49 billion, or 54 percent of the national total. Meanwhile, traditional tech hubs like New York saw funding drop to $1.81 billion, a steep 54 percent decline from the previous month.
The data shows that even within this winner-take-all environment, the largest checks are funding power and infrastructure to keep AI running. Three of the top five rounds went to energy-adjacent players, including a $1.75 billion round for Joulent, $1.0 billion for Commonwealth Fusion Systems, and $550 million for Antora Energy. Though early-stage deals at the pre-seed and Series A levels still made up over 70 percent of deal volume, their actual share of the capital pool has shrunk dramatically. The average deal size spiked to $39.5 million, a metric heavily skewed by these massive capital-intensive mega-rounds.
For non-AI founders, this hyper-concentration of venture dollars demands a fundamental shift in strategy. Capital efficiency is no longer an option, it is a survival mechanism as investors reserve their largest checks for compute-heavy infrastructure. Software startups targeting traditional enterprise niches must prove rapid path to profitability to attract increasingly scarce non-AI allocations. Venture capital is acting less like a broad engine of innovation and more like a targeted treasury funding the buildout of the next computing paradigm.
Over the next twelve months, expect this capital divide to widen as early-stage AI projects face their first major reckoning. Many of the highly funded infrastructure projects will struggle to show commercial returns, forcing investors to reassess their top-heavy portfolios. Consequently, we will likely see a modest capital redistribution back to seed-stage, capital-efficient software startups by late 2027. Until then, non-AI founders will need to rely on customer revenue rather than venture subsidies to survive this skewed funding cycle.
