Q1 2026 VC Hit $300B. AI Took 80% of It.
Global VC hit an all-time record of $300 billion in Q1 2026, and four AI companies alone absorbed 65% of every dollar deployed.

Global venture capital hit $300 billion in Q1 2026, up more than 150% quarter-over-quarter and year-over-year, according to Crunchbase data. That single quarter accounted for 70% of all venture capital deployed across the entirety of 2025. The headline number is staggering on its own. The composition behind it is what actually matters.
AI captured roughly $242 billion, about 80% of total global funding, blowing past the previous record of 55% set in Q1 2025. The names driving those numbers are familiar: OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, and Waymo. Four companies absorbed approximately 65% of every venture dollar deployed in the quarter. This is not a broad-based AI boom. It is a concentration event, and founders operating outside that inner circle need to understand the difference.
Geography tells a sharper story than most coverage has acknowledged. The US captured 83% of global venture dollars in Q1, an unusually dominant share even by historical standards. Europe, while trailing on aggregate dollars, produced what the Financial Times called the continent's largest seed round to date, a new AI startup raising more than $1 billion. China's venture activity remained subdued. Capital is not just concentrating by sector. It is concentrating by zip code.
For founders and investors calibrating strategy for H2 2026, the Q1 data creates a distorted but unavoidable benchmark. Late-stage mega-rounds dominated the quarter, pulling average deal sizes up across the board. That compression at the top risks inflating valuation expectations across the stack, even in rounds where the AI infrastructure thesis does not apply. Investors writing Series A and B checks into non-AI verticals are now operating in a market shaped by dynamics that have nothing to do with their portfolio.
The next twelve months will test whether this concentration holds or cracks. If the four dominant AI platforms begin to generate revenue at scale, the mega-round model gets validated and more capital follows. If monetisation lags, LP patience will thin fast and the correction will hit mid-market rounds first. Founders in AI infrastructure should be locking in runway now. Everyone else should be pricing their rounds against the real market, not the headline one.
