Q1 2026 VC Hit $300B. AI Built the New Floor.
Global VC hit $300 billion in a single quarter, AI captured 80% of it, and the funding correction is officially over.

Venture capital just had its most consequential quarter on record. Crunchbase data shows $300 billion flowed into roughly 6,000 startups globally in Q1 2026, up more than 150% both quarter-over-quarter and year-over-year. To put that in perspective, this single quarter deployed approximately 70% of all venture capital invested across the entirety of 2025. That is not a bounce. That is a structural reset.
The 2023 and 2024 funding correction was real, painful, and necessary. It wrung out the excess of the 2021 zero-interest-rate era and forced founders to operate leaner and investors to underwrite more carefully. What Crunchbase's Q1 2026 data signals is that the correction has fully closed, and the market that replaced it looks nothing like the one before. Capital is not returning cautiously. It is returning with conviction, concentrated, and fast.
AI is not a sector receiving venture attention. It is now the dominant logic of the entire venture asset class. AI companies captured 80% of Q1 2026 funding, approximately $242 billion, surpassing the previous record high of 55% set in Q1 2025. Four US-based AI firms alone raised a combined $188 billion, concentrating an extraordinary share of global capital into a handful of bets. Geography followed the same pattern: the US captured a disproportionate share of global dollars, while Europe produced notable outliers, including what the Financial Times described as the continent's largest seed round ever, with a new AI startup raising more than $1 billion.
For founders and investors operating outside the top tier of AI infrastructure, the implications cut in two directions. On one hand, the AI premium is now baked into market benchmarks. Valuations and round sizes across sectors have been pulled upward by the gravitational force of mega-rounds, meaning founders raising in adjacent categories should expect investors to anchor against inflated comparables. On the other hand, concentration at the top creates real opportunity lower in the stack. Application-layer companies, vertical AI tools, and infrastructure plays that serve the winners are all operating in a market where capital availability is high and the use cases are increasingly proven.
The next twelve months will stress-test whether this surge reflects durable demand or a second speculative cycle. If the large-language-model bets at the center of Q1's mega-rounds begin generating the enterprise revenue their valuations require, institutional confidence will hold and early-stage deal volume will follow. If they do not, the correction that follows will be sharper than 2023, because the multiples being written today are significantly higher. Founders raising now should move quickly, price accurately, and build as though the window is open but not permanent. Because historically, it never is.
