$510B in Six Months: The VC Winter Is Over

2 min read

The funding winter is not just over. It has been vaporized. Global startup investment hit $510 billion in the first half of 2026, according to Crunchbase data, surpassing the entire full-year 2025 total of $440 billion and shattering the previous half-year record of $375 billion set in H2 2021. Six months. Half a trillion dollars. The numbers are not a trend. They are a structural shift in how capital is moving through the technology economy.

AI is the accelerant, and calling it dominant understates the case. AI companies captured more than 70% of all Q2 venture capital globally, a concentration that would have seemed absurd even two years ago. The story behind the headline number is largely the story of two companies: OpenAI and Anthropic combined raised $217 billion in H1 2026, accounting for 43% of all global startup funding. When two entities absorb nearly half of every dollar deployed across the entire global startup ecosystem, the word "boom" requires a careful reading.

What makes this cycle different from 2021 is that exits are recovering in lockstep with deployment, which was not the case during the last peak. Thirty-two venture-backed companies went public above their last private valuation in H1 2026, and M&A activity surged alongside IPO volume. SpaceX's IPO, the largest in history, closed up 19% on its first day. The full VC cycle, deploy capital, grow companies, exit at scale, is firing coherently for the first time since the rate hike era began dismantling it in 2022. That coherence matters more than the raw dollar figure.

The concentration risk, however, is a real problem that founders and LPs cannot afford to dismiss. When megadeals at two companies distort the aggregate to this degree, the health of the broader market becomes harder to read. A founder raising a Series A outside of AI infrastructure is operating in a market that looks nothing like the $510 billion headline suggests. Capital is plentiful at the top and still competitive everywhere else. Investors chasing the AI supercycle are making rational bets, but rational individual decisions can produce irrational market-level outcomes. We have seen this film before.

Over the next twelve months, the central question is whether the exit recovery broadens or stalls. If the IPO window stays open and M&A multiples hold, the capital flooding into AI will eventually create downstream pressure on funds to deploy more broadly, lifting mid-stage and sector-specific startups that have been crowded out. If public markets wobble again, the megadeal concentration will look less like strength and more like a single point of failure for the entire venture asset class. The record is real. What it means for the other 57% of the market is still being written.
